Why are daily vloggers booming on YouTube? Like seriously, they hardly show anything new or exciting. Most of the time, it’s just their boring day in their life as well as their close ones like family and friends. Why do people watch them every single day? Don’t people have a life of their own?
The above are the same questions in the same order I thought of when I started following a daily vlogger. Honestly, it’s freaking addictive as I used to unconsciously wait every single day for a new vlog to get uploaded. But after a couple of days, I asked myself the same question. Why do I care? Why is it so addictive? Well, in this article, we’ll get to know the reason.
History of Vlogging
Before we move forward, let’s get to know the history of vlogging because it’s important. Do you know who was the first vlogger I didn’t? So, I googled and I got to know something interesting. The first vlogger in this world is Adam Kontras and it was shot before YouTube existed i.e., on January 2nd, 2000.
You can still find the first vlog published on YouTube by Adam and it’s a 30-second vlog. Who knew that 24 years later, vlogging would be such a vast industry online? According to a report, the market size of a vlogging camera was USD 697.86 million in 2022 and by 2028, it is expected to reach USD 1991.78 million. These numbers indicate the massive size of the industry and how everyone wants to be a vlogger.
Now let’s understand the psychological point of view.
What makes Daily Vlogs addictive?
Before we move forward, I just want to say that I’m not a professional psychologist so the next reasons are just my observations.
1. Relatable Content: The main reason why daily vlogs are booming is because of the relatability factor. Vloggers show their everyday life and try not to hide anything making it easier for the audience to connect with them. They connect with the creator emotionally which makes them follow the creator for further vlogs.
2. Daily Habit: Habits are addictive and difficult to change which is another reason why daily vlogs are addictive. If you have a habit of waking up at 6 AM and checking your phone every day, then it’ll be difficult for you to change it. Even though you’ll be half asleep, you’ll tend to check your phone unconsciously. Daily vloggers too choose a fixed time to post vlogs which automatically creates a habit for their viewers. For example, if a vlogger whom I follow posts every day at 11 AM, I’ll automatically open YouTube around 11 AM every day to watch his content.
3. Parasocial Relationships: Parasocial relationships which are also known as one-sided relationships are another reason. The viewers develop a parasocial relationship with the vlogger which makes them feel that they know the person well. This leads to them having a one-sided relationship with the vlogger.
4. FOMO: Another major problem these days is FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and it acts as an important reason. It has become difficult for everyone (including me) to skip clickbait thumbnails and titles of vlogs which builds FOMO inside of us. So, we just click on the video and start watching the vlog.
5. Dopamine Release: Oh, this is so true. If you follow any vlogger, you would agree to this point. You just wait every single day to watch a daily vlog to get a daily update from that person about his life. The reward of new content every day at the same time releases dopamine which makes us watch daily vlogs.
Is it worth watching daily vlogs?
This part right here is subjective so if you’re still reading this article, then I’m glad you found it interesting.
No, daily vlogs are not worth watching. If we have to wait every single day at the exact time to watch how someone else’s day was, then it speaks a lot about us.
I only enjoy vlogs that record events that I enjoy. For example, I like watching cricket so if one of my favorite vloggers goes to a stadium to watch a match and vlogs about it, chances are, I’ll enjoy it.
Stalk any famous vlogger’s channel and just observe the thumbnails and titles of their vlogs. Then try to observe it from a non-follower perspective and you’ll understand how bizarre it is. Within 24 hours, there are millions of views to a video where the vlogger mentions how in the whole day, his little brother got hurt.
Either those viewers are unemployed or they hate their life.
P.S.: These opinions are completely subjective and you might not agree with me.
